One of the greatest things in life is identity — knowing who you are, and discovering who God says you are. After the fall of man in Genesis 3, humanity lost that identity, and existence was reduced to a single story: procreation.
Read the genealogies and you will see it — the record of who begat whom, how long they lived, and that they died. Generation after generation, only a handful ever changed the tides of their time. Of one such man the Bible simply and gloriously says: "and Enoch walked with God."
Verse 13 · ValueYe are the salt of the earth
In the New Testament, while teaching on the Beatitudes, Jesus lifted His voice and declared: "Ye are the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13). And here is a key to reading Scripture — anytime the Bible says ye, it is speaking to your identity.
So why salt? Value. Sugar is sweet, yet for all its sweetness it cannot give taste. Salt is different — salt spices up everything it touches. That is who you are. So, child of God, you are not empty. You are not the fool anyone assumed you to be. There is something about you.
You are not empty. Ye are children of God. Ye are the salt of the earth.
Verse 14 · LightYe are the light of the world
The word of God comes line upon line, precept upon precept. And so, in verse fourteen, Jesus continues: "Ye are the light of the world." The world is a system — and you have been set as light to a system full of darkness.
For the whole world lies in darkness, and people only have visibility when there is light. Where there is no light, there is no sight. That is why you matter where God has placed you.
But consider this carefully. Even though the light is already in the wire, the wire must still be plugged in for the light to come forth. The potential is already inside you — the capacity to shine was placed there by God. What releases it is connection to the Source. Stay plugged in, and the light will come.
You were never made to blend into the dark. You were made to give taste, and to give light.
